oh no! i should have realized it was a type of zoanthid but i think i got so caught up in thinking that it was aiptasia or majano that i failed to think outside the box. unfortunately, he is gone already 
but if it really was a rock anemone, maybe there will be more.
however, the picture of the slug/snail posted above is not the same one as the one we had. i didn't particularly care if it was in the tank but rather than have it multiply to unmanagabe or unslightly proportions, we also got rid of it as well.
