How do you properly vacuum sand? I have traditional gravel, and I do a full vacuum when I do a water change. I usually change 33-40% of the water. My setup tho is I remove the intake strainer on my Magnum350 canister filter and attach the hose with the gravel vac. I remove the filter output line and put my drain hose on that and run to the toilet ( I love the valve system the Magnum has!). So when I vacuum the gravel, it's powered by the filter and the dirty water goes strait to the toilet. While this approach gets the gravel clean, I couldn't do that with sand. So what I'm getting at, is how do you vac the sand without sucking up the sand? Obviously could no longer use the filter...but even a syphon approach would suck sand.
