Wow TRe...where did you find a $30 overflow? I have never seen them under $100.

As far as the ball valve there is no problem with putting it on the return line...what you do not want to do is put it on the overflow or in front of the pump.

Dark will definitely help with algae, but I would consider getting a clear one as it will help you keep an eye out for potential problems/clogs in the system.

I agree. Plus usually the outside gets coated in coraline (at lease mine did) so it all blends in nicely, but you can still see down inside the overflow to check for algea build up and whatnot.

i got it from here ive heard some stories about there light setups but i never had a problem with the over flow and for $29.99 what the hell

btw ebay is also a good place to look

Ah...aquatraders...I didn't think about looking there! I too have heard bad things about their MH lighting though I have only read positive things about their PC lights.
