Well, we only moved 7 miles and we transported them in a cooler....quite big! The Eel was very very stressed out. He went CRAZY when we took him out of the tank to put him in the cooler. Well I put the filter in the cooler and let it run and put the heater in there as well to keep the temp regulated and just planned on keeping them in there till the big tank was up and running...I took out 15 gallons of water from the tank before we moved it so I could save some of the bacteria....I dunno if it works that way but I did it anyway...well over night I woke to all 3 dead....Brace yourselves for this...The heater had been giving me probs for a while but I never replaced it...the temp was 86f. I cooked my poor babies! My fault! I was so upset to think that they suffered. My daughters Jack Dempsey and the Pl*co are the only two that survived that. I know I know..go ahead and ream me. I deserve it! Has anyone ever had any luck moving and how...The Eel was so big and super stressed. He injured himself pretty bad when we placed him in the cooler. He tried to jump out and he slammed into the lid. He had a gash on the top of his head. I am at a loss. I am so sad. I don't know what to put in the tank and I don't know that I even deserve any newbies. The Fire Eel's entire bottom portion of his body was white...blotchy white and he when I took him out of the water he wiggled a few times and then went rigid. It was horrible. I mean I know that the temp killed him..but could there have been another something going on as well?

It has been done, and quite successfully... here is a thread that might interest you...

Im very sorry for your losses.
Using tank water was a good idea, however most of the good bacteria was already in your filter...one thing to remember is when moving, the tank should be the LAST thing out of the house, and the FIRST thing set up at the new location. Leaving the fish in that bucket with a wonky heater was a big mistake. A heater and filter are of course the most important elements to success in fish keeping. So, dont go cheap when setting up a tank. If I knew there were problems with my heater, I sure wouldnt trust it to do the job in any circumstances. Well, you could look at this disaster and a huge learning experience or it was all for naught if you never use your tank again.
What you need to do, is research!! Then you CAN set up your tank, start over and be armed with the knowledge you NEED to be successful. It takes a lot of TIME, PATIENCE, and RESEARCH...are you willing to do that? If not, sell your tank.

Aww that stinks I'm sorry. Like Kathy said the best thing you can do is chalk it up to a learning experience.

The eel very well may have stressed itself out and injured itself and that caused an early demise. Fish can stress themselves to death...so its hard to know what to do...you can't exactly hold them in your lap and pet them and tell them 'everythings going to be ok'. Ya know?

A high temp alone probably wouldn't have killed them...my tanks get that hot in the summertime...but things do get more toxic when the water is warmer, as well as the water has less capacity for oxygen...so it could have been any combination of things.

Best of luck getting up and running again...

Yeah, hopefully this will inspire you to get going with another great setup (after you've recovered from the whole crummy experience, that is :().

I gotta agree with Froggy on that one, when I had ick last fall, I ran my tank at around 86 to 88 for about 5-6 days. I'm going on the stress factor, and once again, sorry for your loss.

Ninamarie, are you inquiring about Gouramis? If so, you care for them the same way as bettas only in larger environments and they have to have heaters. They actually require the same sort of things regular fish do except it is crucial that they have access to the surface because like Bettas they are labyrinth fish and need atmospheric air to breathe. Other than that, oh and that they get bloat and constipated easily and should be fed vegetables rather regualrly, they are extremely easy to care for and very rewarding.

Yes, they are freshwater only! I hear that they can also stand brackish. They are awesome fish! Mine had a great personality. He would sleep upside down in his tunnel and would do flips when he was hungry. He took the food right out of my hand! I miss him so much. He was about 2 1/2 feet long when he passed. Great great pet! They require a lot of tank space though! I had a 110 and he could have used more room to swim!

I am sorry for your losses... I am going to be moving in about 5 months. Just a few KM... I am hoping for the best... Of course, I will post the full details of the move on the website when it happens... Until then, I'll try and plan as best as I can... Hopefully next time you move, things will be better.

I am sorry for your loss as well. I am moving in 2 days and I am really keeping my fingers crossed. I have bought one of those aerating bait buckets in hopes that it will make the process a little bit easier. I am only moving a couple of miles away but I know even that can still be tricky.
