The Piranha issue
Well, as I have done my fair share of screaming about people owning dangerous animals, I've grown hoarse!
Anyways, I looked at the reasons he had for getting them and have figured out an easy alternative. First, let's outline the conditions of keeping piranhas:
- Have to be kept in a LARGE tank if you have the amount of them needed to keep them successfully (more than 4 fish and a 60+ Gallon tank)
- They are really MESSY. Since they almost entirely meat, they make a lot of poop. So, as a result, they require a LOT of cleaning and filtration.
- In the rare chance you ever get bitten by at least one of them, they are incredibly fast and voracious about eating when blood is in the water. It's rare, since they are really shy about humans, that they would bite. But, you can never tell and one mistake would be a costly one. I know of people that have lost tips of their fingers to just a few seconds of a feeding frenzy. I need my mouse and keyboard fingers and I'm sure you do too!
So, what to do? Whats the solution?
ok. You want a fish that eats live food. Have you ever checked out the dozens of species of Cichlids? They are ALOT easier to care for and a lot cleaner than Piranhas. They are also, IMHO, infinitely more colorful!
You can also try the Clown (or other) Knife Fish, which can get huge, but is quite the voracious feeder when you put guppy fry in the tank for him and other feeders depending on his size.
See? There are lots of alternatives to the piranha which are much more interesting and much more active. In my experience with seeing Piranha in a home tank, they just sit around most of the time like a Pacu. Ghost Knives do that too, but at least their bottom fin looks wild while they sit waiting for feeding time.
Most Cichlids are mostly active doing something in the tank. If I got another large tank, I would definitely make it a Cichlid tank. But, I don't know if I would get the live food eating ones. Or else, I would find some alternative to giving them live food. Yeah, I know, I'm a wimp.
EDIT: SURE Soulfish! Go ahead and take my idea even before I am done typing!
