My old roomate had a pirahna, Nasty little fish, (he kept in in a 33 gal, was 4-5" across) Chewed down about 10 'medium' feeder goldfish a week... Made a huge mess of the tank, got stressed out by any light. (It finally resided under the light of only those silly walmart lasers)

He liked the darn thing, I thought it was ugly and a waste of tank space... But thats just me, I like lots of fish in my tanks.

I seem to recall in some areas special permits were required to own these fish... Might have to look into that.

I know this thing is closed but i couldn't help but ask a few questions....such is my nature.
First, I was under the impression that pirahnas were illegal to one. At least here in TX. Second, how would you clean your tank. I for one would not even entertain the thought of putting my hand in the tank. lol

In some states, they are illegal to own. I am not sure where they are legal or aren't. I think I heard California is another place they are illegal.

As far as cleaning the tank goes, from what other people have said, the piranha shy away from humans. Well, I am not sure I would risk my arm, hand, or fingers on someone else's experience.

Bottom line for me is that they are unappealing. I think Pacus are hideous as well and they are cousins of the Piranha. They look remarkably similar. Big and ugly. This, of course, is my own personal opinion as far as looks go. :)
