Thanks again Orion..since my wife keeps asking me what I want fo xmas and there is nothing I really need or want..this is going on the list..I am going to send her links to all of the ones I have looked at and whichever she decides to get me thats what I will go with...lol. I will add the rena xp as well...I still would like some feedback from Lotus on why she prefers eheim or from Froggyfox since I think she is using eheim as well.

lmao, sounds like someone I live with...

For what it's worth, I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing about the Magnum series.
I ran into a guy today at petsmart looking into the RENA..we talked a bit and he said he has used the magnum for 10 years without a problem, he just decided he wanted to try something different so he is going with the RENA..I recommended he come here and check the sponsors because they are cheaper than petsmart and most seem to offer some deal on shipping.

P.S. The magnum 350 is $150 at petsmart...twice as much as bigal's

Ecotank (my technical consultant) prefers the Eheims because they don't need cleanining as often as others. They just seem to need a lot less maintenance than others. We have the Eheim Pro.

We use Magnums on some of our tanks. They work well. We have a couple of 350s and a HOT Magnum. The "polishing" micron filter is great for clearing up a tank. Flow is pretty good on them, too. I'm hoping Marineland will continue to sell parts for them. We've had to replace parts here and there over the years. To be honest, we're working on replacing the 350s with Eheims.

On all the tanks we have canisters on, we also run HOB filters. Both for biofiltration and redundancy. It also helps with flow on the longer tanks.

The Fluvals we've tried have been terrible. Just not enough flow and they don't seem to filter as well as Magnums or Eheims.

Thanks Lotus really appreciate the input..so you would recommend the Magnum350 as a good canister filter for a somewhat limited budget? And what spare parts would be recommended to keep on hand?

We've been happy with the Magnums. We really don't keep spare parts on hand, other than the blue filter sleeves. We managed to ruin an impeller (snail in there, I think), and have had some parts become worn over time. I don't think any of the parts we've replaced had made the filter stop completely, it just wasn't working as well as it should have.
