i usually just add dechlor as i am filling the tank back up, but you could also add it into buckets prior to adding it to your tank.

there IS a difference between 'surviving' and 'thriving', as is the case in most tanks without water changes.

the water cycle that exists in the wild, as well as the fishes ability to move away from poor enviornments is not nearly possible to replicate in a fish tank.

that is what water changes are for

I hate to turn this into a bash on star thread (star no offence ment), And it has gone WAY of topic from the original post.... but.

Your plec was in a 20g for 4 years.... And the smaller size....That should be an indication that things are not right.

Myth
Fish grow only as big as their enviroment.
Because your plec was in a smaller tank he stayed small and didnt grow as fast because of that...

Yes and no.

Without the water changes NH4, Nitrite/ate would be quite high...those things are proven to stunt the growth of fish. So it wasnt the size of the tank that keeps fish small. Its the chemicals in their waste that stunts their growth (or kills them)... and wouldnt be to fun to live with.

I once saw a tree that had part of a wire fence around it. As the tree grew it grew around the fence and now the fence is in the middle of the tree. Things are gonna grow....

Thats all im gonna say.

Lev
P.s. Im off to do a water change.... isnt that ironic.

i have just bought a ram. i do regular water changes but i have never measured the pH in my tank. what pH should it be for the ram to do well? and what else can i do to help him to stay healthy? he is so nice and i don't want to lose him.
