people are always surprised by how much LR they "need" to make their tank look full, just to put that in perspective, I have 85 lbs in my 40 gallon tank....
Yeah! I totally agree with you. WOW you have 85lbs in a 40 G. I think i might have to order about 50lbs or maybe just get some Indonesian LR from my lFS for $3 per lbs, maybe about 30 lbs or more depends on finances. Have to think about the cost of lighting and chiller too!

Actually the ratio depends on the type of rock you have and the porosity. South pacific rock, ie. marshall island, fiji, kaleani etc are very porous and have a lot of surface area per pound so you can therefore get away with fewer pounds/gallon. Caribbean and some base rock is very dense and heavy and therefore you need more per gallon such as up to 2lbs/gallon. I have 14lbs of marshall island in my 75 and it is quite full.

Panther, glad to see the rock is helping to clear it up.

the actual amount of Live rock required to perform its purpose as filtration is relatively small, while the tank might look relatively empty the LR is still doing its job, the reason I have so much LR is simply aesthetic.

Thats why I order fiji LR, It is very porous. Lorna you were so right about the live rock clearing up the tank. Since I got the rock the tank has cleared up pretty good. Hope fully with in a few days it will crystal clear.

On Saturday I will be getting some more live rock but this time I will probably get some Indonesian live rock. its cheap not that porous but could be used as base rock. I will get about 40 Lbs. With the 23 lbs in the 20 gallon I think it should be enough rock for the tank.

Thanks everyone for answering my questions,

highly appreciated!!

Update!!

Today I got some more live rock 41 lbs should be enough. So now the grand total is 121 lbs plus the 23 lbs in the 20 gallon. I think the rock is not bad for $3 per lbs Pics below.. Let me know!!

Yes it looks great. Just make sure that they are stacked solidly, you don't want a rock fall......You have some nice caves and overhangs.....you may even want to go higher on one side for light loving corals etc.....it would also aleviate any of the rock wall type of aquascaping and add interest. Now you want to place your powerheads and make sure you don't have any dead spots in the water flow......

Thanks everybody for the compliments!!!

Katie! The setup has already cost me an arm! soon i might have to sell my leg:D.
The compliments and view make it worth every penny!!

As for the rock work. I actually just dumped in the rocks. I still have to aquascape! Once the tank cycles I will aquascape. Will see how it goes!

Their are still 3 costly things I need to get

1) Lighting
2) chiller
3)RO/DI

Yesterday I had checked for ammonia and it was at 5 ppm. The Indonesian rock was actually cured. Anyways lets see when the cycle finish. I can't wait to stock!!!

Skimmer working!!

A tiny update!!

I just checked for ammonia. nitrite and PH.

Salinity : 1.025

Temp: 80 F

The ammonia has gone down from 5.00 ppm to 1.00 ppm.

There is a nitrite spike it is at 5.00 ppm or above.

The ph is low. its at 7.8 This could be due to the ammonia.
