anybody seen/heard of this before? I've seen one in my searching so far. i've always wanted a paludarium, and since i have a 100g tank, plus my lake tang tank now, i was thinking of why not try it...thoughts?

my goal is to just make it as natural as possible on the land side of things, and that is where i am focusing my research. types of plants, lighting, additional animals, etc...but i may just have to go with non-native plants and animals on the land part.

Some of the neatest ones I've seen didn't have a lot in terms of 'land' as in horizontal land space, but were about half full of water, with lots of live plants on the background draped over into the water, and some in the water growing out. This way both biotopes blend into each other nicely.

Lotus is right though, lots of pics out there, but not always a lot of info on the setup. But yeah, any fish can work. Just keep the basic ideas in mind for stock.

I have the fish, just transferring over my 20gL inhabitants (in my signature, plus a ton of fry). was at home depot today and they had some marsh/semi aquatic plants which should be good to start with. the nice thing about being in louisiana is that there is no short supply of semi-aquatic plants. i am rinsing sand as i type, and the goal is to get all the sand and rock work set up today. the tank is longer than it is high, so i was thinking of going for a shore like set up, with the rocks built up on one side and the plants in there, but i could do a long shore, as in if you are facing the tank you have the view of the shore from the water, with the rocks lining the back of the tank. i will see what looks best.

It's a great start. Looks like to me that it still has more of a 'fish tank' feel to it than a paludarium though. Difficult to pull off in short tanks I realize. Some ideas that immediately pop into my head to help give it a more landish feel is to use a dark/black back ground on the outside, and on the inside use corkbark or something similar to attach moss to. It doesn't even have to be live moss for that matter. But the corkbark would also give a good background feeling for the moss as well. I think your well headed in the right direction though.

yeah, not the type of mardi gras party i wish we could have...i'm just getting it fish ready for the party, but not near my personal level of satisfaction as far as a paludarium. this will be a work in progress, with plants and more land area being my next step.

Here is something I've always pondered: Since I normally didn't have a tall enough tank to do one with, and I always personally felt that tall ones looked much better than short ones, (and since I'm cheap) take a short tank and build a plexiglass enclosure around it for the top 'land' part of the tank. If that makes any since to you. You could do the front piece solid, and put the access doors on the side to not obstruct the view.

Hey now, your there to help the boys, not corrupt them ;)

i tossed around the idea of building a plexiglass/mesh box to fit over the top to increase the height in the tank for more land area, but my diy skills have never been tested, so i need to do some serious research first...plus need to let the ol'bank account recharge after the filter and light shopping. today i moved all the fish over to the new tank and took down the old tank...finished it all 10 min before our party...spent the majority of the time sucking up tiny fry i didn't even know existed with an eye dropper, but i got every last one. added some more rocks too, and the rest of the shells.
