How well do Africans go together

#3
My latest Chiclid tank was a 55 gallon and consited of 2 Auratus, 2 Kenyi's, 2 JD's (didn't mean to buy these, they were listed as Jewels when I bought them) and 1 common Pleco. The tank ran well for about 6 months and then all in 1 week my Kenyi's killed my Auratus's and my JD's killed my Kenyi's. All thats left are my 2 Jack Demspeys, the bigger one keeps the little one in hiding and my hippy pleco who would hide the dead fish so that they couldn't be eaten. All in all I say it was a learning expierience, this was my first Chiclid tank and I failed.

I guess my point was that I only had 6 chiclids in my 55 gallon and it was disasterous, maybe I did a bad job of selecting IDK.

Good Luck and let us know how it worked out. I too am curious to know what stocking ideas your thinking of.

I would like to note aside from the mix of cichlids you went with, they may have ran out of room = killing each other. 1 JD needs 50G of space for itself. Your 2 JDs should be in a 100G tank with good hiding places.I'd say if you had the 6 fish together maybe in a 125-150G tank, they would have been less inclined to kill each other. It sounds like you learned a lot from your setup, and now everyone can see a perfect example of not giving even only 6 cichlids a lack of room

It would of worked out fine if the JD's were actualy jewels like they were listed as, they definately have plenty of hiding places and my Jd's are only 3 inches and 2 inches, still young. I will indeed need to move them to a larger tank though, thanks to P**co I now have to buy a 100 gallon tank to support my $4 "jewels" lol I hate them

lol.....yep. I had to get a 150 gallon tank cause the LFS just had to make me buy my Africans ..which I put in my CA tank and then after reading about the diets are so differant...had to put them somewhere.

BTW..check out petsmart for tanks ..they had reasonable tanks where Petco was overpriced around me.

Which african's were you looking at twiant?
What helped me decide was choose a lake, Say Lake Malawi, then choose Mbuna, Haps or Peacocks.

my local Petco actually has a 175 bowfront with stand and cover on sale for members for like $495 all because of a little flaw in the wood that I guess happened during shipping. Beautiful tank and of course they are throwing in the crappy filter, heater and net they always come with, I have sooo many of these extra pieces just sitting around, lol.

Im not going with Chiclids anymore. I want live plants so I have to give up on the Africans.
