I have one gourami and would like two. I don't know if I have a male or female. How do I tell and does it matter what sex the second one is? I am really not interested in breeding anything at this point.

If its a dwarf gourami and is colorful then its a male. Its you have a larger Gourami (blue, pearl, gold...ect) then you tell by looking at their top fins. Males have longer top fins that come to a point and females are shorter and stubbier. See pics below:

It's a dwarf gourami. The front 3/4 is very rust colored with brighter orange stripes. The rear 1/4 is pale blue with the orange stripes. Both dorsal and ventral fins appear to be rounded in front, but held close to the body so hard to tell and the rear is square and slightly pointed rearward. Both dorsal and ventral are about the same length - does that help? And does it make a difference if I put same sex together if I can't be certain?

gouramis whether they are dwarf or regular, you sex them by their dorsal fin. i used to keep lots of different gourami's. heres a link: Tropical Fish for Freshwater Aquariums: Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami
3rd paragraph tells you. males have a longer pointed dorsal fin and females a shorter rounded one. the dorsal fin is the top fin next to their back fin. in the pic to that link that is a male.

both of those look like females to me. cant see the dorsal fin on the top one the best, too dark, so i cant be for sure but the bottom one is a female for sure

2nd one is a blue gourami, heres a link: Blue Gourami

blue gouramis have the distinct dark circle on their body the opalines dont

i have kept both at different times before along with gold, kissing, and neon blue dwarf gourami's

liveaquaria.com is a very accurate site to reference to

does it look like this one? Tropical Fish for Freshwater Aquariums: Dwarf Gourami Labyrinth Fish

yes it makes a difference on sex. gouramis are just like bettas. in fact if you put gouramis and bettas together, if wrong sexes are mixed they will fight to death. also know with gouramis there will be a dominant one even though they say they are peaceful. they can get more aggressive the older they get. dwarf not as much as gold, blue, or opaline.

anyway you can get a pic?

Tropical can you give me a list of things that are considered "breeding behaviour" for gouramis Red flame dwarfs to be exact, cause i think mine are trying to mate.
all gouramis will create a bubble nest on the surface of the water.
Tropical Fish for Freshwater Aquariums: Flame Dwarf Gourami
5th paragraphs give a brief explanation
heres some more info: Flame Dwarf Gourami, Colisa lalia (hybrid), Family: Osphronemidae, Subfamily: Luciocephalinae

hope this helps some shoot some more questions if you have them. like it says even in the 2nd link they are a little more unique in their bubble nests and bring plant pieces and their and weave them in

sorry for hijacking the thread hyra

Pic from Tropicalcrazy: No it doesn't look exactly like that because the back 3/4 has no blue so it is sort of orange stripes on rust. That is kind of the problem - part of the time it looks like a less brightly colored version than the one I saw this weekend at Walmart which looks like your picture. I need to figure out the picture taking business - have digital camera or at least husband does, but not sure I understand the finesse of getting the pictures on the internet.

Well, TC, I read all the websites you pointed out and have pretty much concluded I have a male. Now what do I do?? One place I read says it is hard to find a female because stores usually only stock males. But I also read they like to be in groups and will pair up. If you can't buy females, am I suppose to find a gay male, lol? Or is he doomed to be a loner? This whole aquarium business is getting more complicated than I remember it being when my kids were growing up! I only have a 16g tank and every fish I pick can't be in a harem, school or sorority either.

I wouldn't try two males together, especially in a smallish tank like you have. Just wait for a female to arrive - they do come occasionally - or, yeah, he's going to be on his own.
Sorry if I missed it somewhere else - but what else is in your tank?

gouramis sometimes just do better on their own so thats not always a bad thing. you could always leave it with 1 gourami and a small peaceful community of tetras or danios or something. if you want a female keep your eye out, ive seen plenty female gourami's at lfs's quite frequently. if its a little more unique of one than it may be a little harder but wherever you bought yours just watch it and i bet you'll find a female in no time

I have one gourami, 4 mollies and a mystery snail in the 16g tank and a betta in a bowl. I have had the betta for almost 2years at room temp-69 degrees and he has been happy. I take him with when we take our travel trailer to the ocean - 2 dogs, a cat and a fish. I am hesitant to put him in the big tank because he has done so well. He gets all excited every AM when I come out to pack lunch (He's on the kitchen counter). The tank would be a big change and the water does circulate a lot.

DO NOT mix your betta with gourami. if sexes are wrong they will kill each other like 2 bettas. someone who has had success with mixing gourami's and bettas would need to give you proper advice but i do know for a fact that if incorrectly put together they will kill each other. i think it is because both are labrinyth fish idk. it has something to do with be around the same family or something like that

TC, you say you have a 16g bowfront tank which may be the same as my Aqueon - You list all those plants - where do you find them? Petsmart and Petco have a very small selection - none of the ones you named and I also am curious where to find floating plants. Don't worry, I never actually planned on putting my betta in there even before I started stocking because of the water temperature he was so acclimated to.

Vallisneria, Rotala Rotundifolia, Limnophila Sessiliflora (asian marshweed), & Hygrophila Polysperma Var 'Sunset': these all came from a guy i found on craigslist.

Sagittaria Subulata: i picked up at adams aquatics here locally

Elodea (anachris): i picked up at 2 different local lfs's (adams aquatics and iowa pet foods and aquatics)

Taxiphyllum Barbieri (java moss): i got this from my brother in law, he had tons growing in his 75g

Aponthegen & Echinodorus Amazonicus (amazon sword): the amazon sword was quite large in the petco tanks and the aponthegen started out as a bulb in a variety pack that i got from petco. the aponthegen took forever but i also didnt have correct tank setup

when buying plants from petco or petsmart you have to be careful because they do sell some non aquatic plants. i have a couple other shops in town like the ones i mentioned and they carry a little more wide variety, more so adams aquatics. you can find all these plants online at like liveaquaria.com or aquariumplants.com

a good floating plant would be the anachris or hornwart. anachris is nice because you can always plant it and it does produce oxygen for the tank and removes harmful nutrients that are bad for fish and plants

fish are always so much more peaceful when they have plants in the tank ive noticed. seems like the feel at home. lol

even the smallest addition brings life to the tank

i also have a bunch of java fern and hornwart i got from brother in law. i started out with the hornwart like 2 years ago and then gave it to him and there were only a couple tiny pieces after he cleaned it out and now he has a ton floating in his 75g. i got the hornwart from iowa pet foods and aquatics and you can find the java fern at petco sometimes and it could also float. it itself determines its own height but after so long its roots will grab ahold of something and grow like crazy from there. both plants are very hardy and you can float. you dont need chemicals or plant light to grow. just throw them in your tank and watch them grow
