HOW TO TELL IF YOUR FISH PERSON AT THE PET STORE IS SMART OR NOT

First think of some questions about some kind of filter or fish that u can ask them,
Find the answers online , then ask them if they cant seem to find the answer or they have to look at some thing to get the answer. then there probaly not.

Ask them if they had any experience with the fish , ask what kind of tank , A BOWL DOESN'T COUNT .

At my lfs the usual guy wasn't there so i was trading some guppies for tiger barbs and a clown loach, for 15 guppies he gave me 4 tiger barbs(2.99 each) and a clown loach ( 3.99) u do the math , he didn't no any thing i robed him basically . most of the gupppies were babies !

At another petstore the guy i went to get angelfish at told me exactly what each 1 was called (which i already new) i got 2 smoke angels and a kio.

Most lfs fish people act like there gods but really there not so keep You i out for that!

any corrections gladly to except , and or mistakes thanks

The biggest problem I see with your blanket statements is that they are just that: BLANKET STATEMENTS.

Have you ever really talked to LFS employees or the employees at Petco/Petsmart? Nine times out of ten, they aren't given ANY training whatsoever beyond how to catch and bag fish and a brief run-down of the "one inch per gallon rule." In fact, the girls in one of my LFSs have not been given ANY training at all. This isn't their fault, it is the fault of the employers.

As for the guy at the LFS knowing what the angelfish colors are called...that isn't that difficult. Most of the time, the fish they receive in shipments are labeled as far as color anyway (even if they don't specifically label the colors on their tanks). Now, if he knew off-hand the specific pH preferences, compatibility with other types of fish (large and small), tank size requirements, adult size (length AND height), etc. THEN I would be impressed.

I know I keep mentioning it, but can you please proof-read before you post stuff? I'm getting to the point where I don't want to read your posts because of the atrocious spelling and grammar that make it difficult to read and know what you're talking about. Thanks!

Personally, I think a good, well-trained LFS employee does not just know the specific requirements for the fish as far as pH and all that. A good LFS employee should ask what size tank the fish is going in and what other inhabitants are in the tank. If they see any problems with your current stock, they should warn you about the potential problems before giving you any more fish to put into the tank. Fish keeping isn't just about getting pretty fish or random fish you like, it's about providing the best possible home for the fish you have/want, which means having compatible tankmates and a stable environment. A good LFS employee should recognize that and strive to help their customers attain the best environment possible for their fish. Sadly, too many people now see employment as "just a job" and don't take the time to do their job well, which is probably why there are so many horror stories that begin with "the fish store employee told me to..." *sigh*

No, I'm sorry Freash (JESUS H. CHRIST! IT'S FRESH!!!!!) Water Monster. I've just been trying not to wince. The English student in me wants to rip your vowels out. Paige is not alone. Poor grammar suggests not caring, lower education, lack of intelligence or non-native speaking. Which one are you?

You can usually tell if you drop the guy/girl some easy test questions. It's not that hard to figure it out.

"So how many gourami can I put in a 20 gal tank?"
"Would a pleco be cool for that same 20? I hear they eat algae, would it fix my algae problem?"

They're baiting questions.

No eggs yet. So far my gold has been riding blue for a couple days now. I figure it's just a matter of time.

Oh, and my blue one at a whole frozen blood worm this morning. She (I think she) beat most of the fish to it. Shocked me a bit.

And Bob said: Let there be light! And there was.... (For around 20-30 bucks)

10 Gal is 2WPG
29g is now 4.1WPG

1. 4x26WPG 6500k screw-ins. (The light in my room is on full blast and it looks like midnight in the room.)
2. This is the only mess you'll have. (If you want to hide the cables better you can buy a little white sticky strip that holds all the wires and makes it pretty on top.)
3. Just comparing the brightness of the two tanks. (If anybody knows how to get rid of the green tint in my 29 I'm all ears.)

LOL! aakaakaak, I meant water changes just to remove the tint in the water. :p And sorry! Not sure why I put 20gal...I knew you had a 29gal. lol My only defense is that the zero and the nine are right next to each other on the numbers at the top of the keyboard and I don't a have a ten-key number pad on my laptop. :p

I think we are all ganging up on you now that someone started. I have been skipping your posts also - We all make mistakes, but your posts are downright cryptic!

That's a nice looking rain-gutter light you made there. Are you in any way worried about it heating up? The fluorescent light strip I used to have had a fan in it, and it was loud, so I switched to LEDs. Do all lights have noisy fans in them, or just some, and if I build one should I worry about it getting hot?

I'm watching it to see if it gets too hot for what I got going on. The plastic is hot to the back of my hand, but tolerable with my palm. I might end up drilling a few holes in the top and wiring a fan or two in. But it's not too bad right now. It sort of keeps things warm since the weather is getting cold. I'll look into fans for the summer though. Or maybe I'll just reduce the bulb wattage a little.

I need a good name for my Bolivian Ram. I dunno if it's a he or she. They're a little harder to tell, but I "think" it's a boy. So "he" acts like a cross between a giant cory and a happy puppy. Any ideas?
