Random announcement today...my friend offered me her 6-year-old purebred registered arabian mare and offered to finish training her in whatever direction I want to go with her (trails, show, whatever).

Also, the LFS that I got my 46gal bowfront stand from has a 28gal bowfront stand. I would have bought it today, but there was no price on it and since the owner is out of town until New Year's, the girl working couldn't sell it to me (at least not until she can get a hold of the owner and find out how much she wants for it). Hoping they want less than $20 for it (got my 46gal stand for $25). I REALLY need it for my FOWLR tank.

So what should I have in my filter for media? It came with carbon and like 5 bio stars. Can I substitute chopped up pvc pipe for ceramic rings?

You're living in a trailer and you're thinking about getting a horse? Is she planning on feeding for the horse as well? They can be rather expensive.

Wow, dude...TOTALLY uncalled for! You don't know my situation or what I can afford or can't afford. Besides, living in a mobile home doesn't mean SQUAT. Do you also think that because I live in a mobile home I'm "trailer trash"? I live in a relatively rural area...until a few years ago, the majority of the houses were mobile homes. If you lived in a site-built home, you were living in the lap of luxury.

I know exactly how much it costs to have a horse and I wouldn't even be considering one if I didn't know I could handle paying for it.

I was friends with someone who used to have two horses, and while I think they were too much dirty work for me they always seemed like cool pets. They have lots of personality, like big dogs you can ride. That's what I thought anyways.

lol...Ryan, for me half the fun of working with horses is the mess. I know that sounds weird, but I LOVE the smell of horses I could muck stalls all day (and have :p ). And yes, they can be likened to big dogs. Big 1,000+lbs dogs with hard hooves, but...their personalities are like dogs. Some are playful (like Dakota, the gelding I had until his stupid former owners decided to be jerks) and others are very dignified (like Compton, one of our off-the-track thoroughbreds).

I'm sorry Paige. I didn't mean you were trailer trash or anything like that. If I offended you I apologize. I just know that horses aren't cheap to keep. I didn't know if you knew that or not. Seriously, I didn't mean to offend you in the least.

Merry Christmas!

I love the way horses smell too, but they're still too much for me to take care of. Atleast at this stage in my life anyways.

Wow, that is EXTREMELY expensive for a horse, Big_P. The gelding that I "have" at the moment (whose old owners are being jerks and might be taking him back, which is part of the reason my friend offered me her mare) costs me $80 per month in feed and that's it. I work off his boarding fees by working around the barn. I know some horses are more than that because they require special diets and whatnot, but what your friend is paying is ridiculous!

It's okay, Aak. I was probably being a bit sensitive anyway. It's one of those "it was late, I was tired, I probably read too much into it" type deals. Also, my living arrangements are quite unique in that I don't pay rent, just utilities (which even with my tanks is less than $100 a month). :)

On a slightly different note...Merry late Christmas, everyone! Hope everyone got everything they wanted...and more. I know I made out like a freakin' bandit (wasn't expecting to get very much...instead, my sister thoroughly spoiled me!).

Yay for stuffs you need, Dylandrewsdad! :D

I'm trying to decide what to do with my 55gal. I got a new female betta on Friday and added her to the 55gal, but she's being constantly chased by my old female. So, I have a couple of choices. I'm going to be removing the dwarf gourami and female platy this coming week and taking them to the LFS (along with my dogface puffer from the FOWLR tank). I can leave the new female in the 55gal and see if the aggression/stupidity settles down after the two jerks leave (the DG and the platy are the ones who started all the chasing in the first place, even before I added the new girl)...or I can just remove the new girl and put her in my 18gal tall. If I put her in the 18gal tall, she'd go in with six Von Rio tetras, six neon tetras and three kuhli loaches (PFS substrate, heavily planted, rocks and driftwood). So, opinions?

We had horses and had an airplane. I use to complain to hubby the cost of keeping and using the airplane. After keeping records for a year I had to concede - we spent a lot more money on a couple of horses than on the airplane. Both cost money whether you are actually using them or not. Unfortunately so many people in this area got horses that they now can't afford to feed because of the cost of hay (among other things) and they can't even give them away.

My random thought for the day:

I made a homemade background a few months ago out of eggcrate and slate tiles. Recently my dad and I talked about him giving me some of the styrofoam faux-rocks he has left over from redoing his fireplace as a more textured background, but I'm hesitant to glue anything to the back of my tank incase I change my mind later on down the road. As it turned out, he didn't have enough of the foam left to cover the entire area of my tank anyways, so the idea was voided, but it did make me think...
Is there a chance that since my eggcrate isn't glued that things (like food and waste mostly, there's really no chance of fish) are getting behind it and throwing off my parameters? I haven't checked in a while, but the last time I did everything was fine, and I guess that means maybe I shouldn't be worrying about this. The last time I looked behind it there seemed to be a lot of things growing, but they looked like the bacteria colonies in the filter. Does anyone have any experience with anything like this?

Random update:
As I pass through college town from on my way from Florida to Memphis, I'm stopping by for a few hours to check on my tank and do a water change. Everything looks good (sans snails still), and my plants have grown a lot. I seem to have lost one neon, but he may just be hiding somewhere or I'm miscounting. Here I go on my last week-away-from-tank for the holiday season.

EDIT: Counted 10 tetras after I got out of the shower. I plan to stop by a pet shop on the way to Memphis to check out bio-media for my new canister. Any advice on what to get?

Random Announcement: New 10 gallon tank for my work desk aquired. I'm guessing that the water here is going to be fairly hard, but I'm not sure yet. Pea puffers (and maybe bumblebee gobies if the ones I can get are the FW kind.) were what I was looking into, but I'm not sure that's ideal for an office tank. Maybe I'm second guessing myself. I'll know more after I put water in the tank and test it.
