The tank is 4' X 2' X 6" and built into a 2X4 wall. The tank sticks out 3/4" on each side and hidden by the trim.

Filter- XP2 - plumbed through the wall into the bathroom.

Lights - 1 GE croma 50 and 1 GE aquarium. I used a regular 48" fixture (hopefully it lasts in such harsh conditions.) The lights are on a 12 hr cycle.

6 plants
6 harlequins

cool, i've always wanted a tank built into a wall like yours, are you planning on adding any more fish soon? if i had that tank i would add angels because its so tall and thin, i think it would mimic the angels natural habbitat in the wild where they swin in tree roots that are alined vertically nest to each other

Nice work! 30 gallons of beauty, sort of like a living picture. For your wife, maybe extend the tubing down the wall stud cavity a little (remove or drill the cross-stud brace) and build a little cabinet with a laminate counter top for the canister filter to hide it all!

Thank you,

I was going to build a cabinet for the filter but have decided to simply fix the drywall and put the filter on a small corner shelf - It is to nifty looking to hide.

I have just added the fish about 4 days ago - I have to wait for the cycle before i add any more. This is the first fist tank I have ever had and could use some advise on stocking.

The water is low because I had a small flood - oops! Someone told me not to add any water for a week or two??

That is SO cool! Do you keep the water level where it is in the pictures? Personally I think I'd put something around the tank on the wall to make it look like its a picture, and then it would hide the space at the top that is empty....but hey thats awesome as is :) and yes I'm totally jealous!

Edit : you posted while I did haha, glad to hear the water is low on purpose and not going to be like that all the time :)

Cycling with rasboras? eesh ok :) Good luck w/ that.

what caused the flood? is your tank leaking?

don't add any water or anymore fish until after your tank is cycled. when your nitrites are down and your nitrates start to rise, do a water change and that should finish off your cycle. some of your fish might die off in this period. i lost about 15 fish due to stupidity when i listened to somebody at an LFS. they told me i didn't have to cycle a freshwater aquarium. :(

when you start stocking your aquarium, do so slowly or you'll get a spike in your water parimeters.

best of luck with your new tank!

He found the ship at Big Al's Fish store. Thats were I met Instant (aka Randy) and told him about myfishtank.net. We were standing in line for about 30 minutes during their huge boxing day sale, and he had a cart-full of stuff, including the ship, filters, rocks, etc.

Look under decorations - Resin Ornaments - around page 2 or 3 for ships.

Looking good and I'm sure it'll look even better when finished and with more stock giving the living picture more movement. But I would have to say put that filter in a cabinet, it's not THAT nifty looking!! ;-)

I am another who'd love to attempt an in-wall tank like this, but maybe a bit wider than 6 inches - what were the problems you had with your project?

Maybe by "nifty" I meant that I paid alot of money for it and it makes me feel better in my mind if she is attractive - ah.... I mean it is attractive!!

Yes only 6" wide - I left the top part of the trim loose. It is still very tight (I am going to have to stop working out my wrists) I had to chop the ship on the table saw to get er in there.

If I were to do it again I would consider an 8" tank with 3/4 protruding on the main viewing wall - ie, living room and 2 3/4 sticking out on the other side.

Hey froggy, what is wrong with cycling rasboras? the grumpy sales guy at big als said they would be fine...

I filled up the tank and it is much much more pleasant - the light get difused in the water.

The project was a cinch - The turnaround point was when I found the glass for $80 - cut and pollished. the glueing was dificult as the tank is sooo narrow. The instalation, trim, plumbing, electrical - all very very simple. If anyone wants any more info just pm me.
