I hear you Mike! Sometimes I get caught with it too!  *thumbsupsmiley*

I have a betta in a 2G bowl here at work! Whats wrong with that? It is cycled (brought gravel, fake plant, a mountain from a established tank) and it seems fine. Change around 40% water once a week. Water is pre conditioned meaning is has stood at least 4 days. I also have snails in it to keep the algae at bay.

ASPGURU:  My email is Dixie61@bellsouth.net  Drop me a line.  My AIM is NBForrestCSA61.  I'll be going out for a while tonight, so eamil me and I'll reply when I return.  I am from Georgia.

Maybe I need to get a 2gal bowl for mine too.  Seeing as he probably won't be happy in probably a quart of water until my tank cycles.  I'll see about that this week end.

ronrca that's a great example of how to take care of a bowl, unfortunatly that's not the norm.i also know that many betta keepers like to use a bowl because too much filtration can disturb a betta.i'm tring to make a device that fill let me use a ugf without causing suface movement.

I'm going to guess that either the betta you lost was either ill when you got it, already significantly stress and when you added him to the tank with an ammonia of 6 - 7 (I think that's what you had on 6/26) it was just too much for him.   :(

BTW I have 2 male bettas, each is in a 2.5 gal hex that have UGF.  The airstones in the airlift tubes cause some surface agitation - but not enough to even make their fins move.  I even have tiny heaters in these tanks to keep the water around 75F.  I vacuum the gravel and perform water changes about every 10 days.  They appear very healthy and happy.

Some folks think that because bettas in the wild are found in shallow, stagnant puddles - that is how they should be maintained in an artificial environment like an aquarium.  IMHO, the bettas you get from breeders and the LFS are most certainly not wild.  They have been specifically bred to have the characteristics that humans desire, not what is best for the fish.  You wouldn't expect a AKC pure bred tea cup poodle to thrive in the same environment as a pack of dingoes, why should the betta?

This post is most likely to get heavy critisism - but the above is mearly my opinion.  Like particular body parts, everyone has one.

I don't understand bettas...so I don't keep them.

Way back, when I was a newbie, with ammonia, nitrIte high nitrates, ect.. My betta lived a few years.

My sister-in-law a few years back had 3 bettas in a 2 gallon tank with dividers, with about 2 inches of scum and food on the bottom. No heater, no filter, no lights, no water changes. They lived for a long time.

I can't keep a betta now if I could. The last 4 I bought died within a month in different tanks. This was a year ago at least...but I will not buy anymore.

I think the bettas around here like the little bowls with green water..and hate my big tanks with the clean water. ::)

I've got a betta in a small glass ( I didn't think it would take this long to cycle my tank).  So I am going to go get him a bigger tank and when he moves into my big tank, I'll make that one my quarantine tank.  And I think I'll get him a snail tank mate so he won't be lonely.
