It sounds like this was there first time ever spawning. One of them probably wasn't sure on what to do, it will happen the first few times. Atleast you can look foward to them breeding again!!

Yep, very normal for cichlids to eat their eggs the first few times.

hmmmm this is there 4th time now. But is it something to do with the dark? like do they get scared or something and eat them?

Hm.... so they have bred 4 times and no eggs the next day??? I remember my angels having the same problem. It took them 6 times until the eggs finaly hatched, but that may be different with Rams.

Thanks silver . Maybe they think the water conditions are not right so they ate them?

Its probably them just inexperienced.

well they are spawning again right now. I think im gonna try and raise the eggs/fry myself, does anyone know if ram fry can fit through the netting on a net breeder? The netting is VERY fine. Also i was thinking of putting a powerhead outside the net and pointing it in towards the eggs inside the net, would that work? the powerhead i have isnt very powerful, so it wouldnt be too strong

well i just wanted to update that i put the eggs into a breeder net and i have a power head about 15cm away from them. The parents were getting really stressy over the eggs and chasing all the fish away, and then when i took away the eggs they were biting my hand. I feel bad

LOL thanks . I got up this morning and all the eggs appear to be fertilised, i.e no whiite ones. They are a peachy/orangey color

I hope they make it!!

EDIT: well actually after a closer look, theres about 4 white unfertilised ones, im taking those out now.

Congrats. So you are rearing the eggs by yourself?

hey matt, yeah im gonna try. Just looked again and i removed about 6 more unfertilised ones.

well looked again and all the eggs have turned white . I KNOW there was fry developing because i could see there eyes and spines. I think its my hard water KILLING them

Sorry to hear that Helena I am not trying to be rude here but that is why i let the parents take care of the eggs. Their wild counterparts would do the same thing although the water conditons are at there satisfaction, but eventually the eggs would survive Personaly, i would let the parents take care of them, or get another male to put with the female and mabey try another female with the first male and see if any survive

BEAUTIFUL rams! I know you said you got them from a breeder, but was the breeder an online one? Or was it just in your city? Do you know if they ship? Because I would absolutely love to get a pair as beautiful as yours.
