If this was a Walmart kit, they sell a 10watt bulb in the fish department to replace the kit's incadescent bulb. It has to fit the fixture, not just any screw-in type bulb will work. Its best to take out the bulb you have now to make sure you get the right one when you go shopping.

OrangeCones, do you have any idea how much the replacement bulb costs? I'm assuming it's fluorescent? I think I have a walmart kit, and am looking to replace the incandescent with a fluorescent bulb.

I bought what I gathered was the standard fluorescent replacement for I believe $5.85 for three of my tanks. One tank has two bulbs and I only replaced one. The side with the fluorescent bulb and both the other small tanks grow more algae, but I like the lighting better. The two white mollies literally glow!

I have a question. Fishman has 4 Kuhli in a 5.5g tank with a betta. It is supposedly 142% over stocked, with no test kit, but that isn't actually what I am concerned about - a lot of people apparently call kuhlis "snakes" and although I doubt they would hurt the betta, he may see them as threats because they can be fairly active, they are in a small space and the betta doesn't know how small their mouths are, they are probably just snakes to him.

Real snakes, even small ones can swallow pretty big frogs and fish. Our garter snakes probably don't have a head any bigger than a small lima bean and they managed to clean out my gold fish years ago.

Betta change color when they are threatened, also. So far on this site I haven't seen anyone else mixing a betta with kuhlis.

The only reason they call kuhlis snakes is because they look like it... :p They are very docile, harmless, and alittle spazzy[typical crazy loach behavior] creatures...I have maybe a 4" one that's...4-5 years old and out lived it's 3 companions...it lives in a 40 gallon breeder with Doom, my big angelfish and even she ignores it[she eats most fish, but usually only brightly colored ones]...of course, it's not often seen, but it's in there...

I had the 4 in with a betta in a 10 gallon when I first got the loaches and they were fine, but eventually, I just decided the loaches needed more room so they got my 29, then 55, and then 40gB[has more width then the other 2 tanks - when I got it last year]...my friend had 5, I think, in with a halfmoon plakat[short finned] betta in a 20gH.

I'm not sure about the bettas changing colors...I've seen them fade[like yesterday when I was working on my divided tanks, they were pretty faded] and have stress lines[I never see those on male bettas]...but as for changing color, I've never heard that...I know marbles can[and do for the fun of it] but that's alittle different...

Oc, I agree whole heartily. He got the first two guppies on 3/20 and the second two on 4/02. When the first two died on 6/26 he had already figured when the other two died he was getting a better. Miraculously they died in 3 or 4 days. I don't know much about guppies, but his were Tequila Sunrise and I had never heard of "annual" guppies, but even annual indicates a year or longer. I always thought they were pretty hearty fish. That tank of his is pretty crowded now with that betta and 4 kuhlis. It is also still not level, but I don't suppose that matters much with a 5.5g tank. And I still don't think the betta enjoys being in there with those 4 kuhlis if they are as active as he says.

There is no such thing as an annual guppy. He made that up.

They are hearty, but not in those circumstances.

Sadly, Fishman1995 has not yet learned that fish are living creatures, and just because they all swim in water does not make them all compatable with each other.

Same ole problems, nothing has changed.

Fishman1995, if you are still reading this, I did not mean to chase you away. Nothing anyone has said was harsh or unkind, only the truth as it seems with what you are reporting.

It is just frustrating that it is the same problems and the fish suffer with their lives over preventable issues. You know that the LFS person is not the best source of information in most situations. Use a browser, and search for 'Guppy Lifespan' and you will see ranges from 1.5 and 4 years. So an 'annual' guppy (where did you hear that?) and 6 months is not right.

I just feel i have to not even tell anyone my stocking to get a nice response. The fact of the matter was, the fish weren't suffering UNTIL i left. I kept up with my 75% water change per week (25% every 2 days and a 10% extra on the 7th) and i also fed correctly and i do a gravel vacume weekly. When i got home, there was SO much uneaten food, at least 15 betta pellets (even if Ferdnan didnt eat at all, there should have been 4 uneate pellets at the most) and there was slimy strands all over the bottom coming off piles of uneaten shrimp pellets and there we're 3 dead kuhli loach's, that had been dead for at least 12-14 hours as they had went stiff and we're begining to turn white. If i overstock a tank, i make sure i care for it the way it should be.so i dont find it fair that just because the fish died because i wasnt here to do a water change and my uncle overfed that you guys call me a bad fish keeper again, you just assumed i never do anything, now, i understand i still need my testkit, and il get one when i get the money, but as of right now, all i can get is a strip tester if it'l ease you guys off a bit, i dont want to have to leave but it makes me feel horrible when you guys tell me off like this when i been doing all i can atm to care for my fishes. If it we're up to me, id have 4 55 gallon tanks and who knows what else, if i had the money. Im sorry i blew up...again! and OC, your private message thing, added to this, i feel you dont consider me a friend anymore, im more of just some dumb bad fish keeping kid. I hope this don't scare everyone away again.

Fishman1995 - I simply asked that you not include me in your signature as the 'Oto Expert'..I've never claimed to be an 'Oto Expert' and didn't want to be listed as such. Nothing to do with you being my 'friend' or not.

You don't seem to get it, Fishman, the water testing kit isn't for US, its for your FISH. This whole thing has always been about the fish, your choices of fish and overstocking. As Aqadvisor says with many of your plans - "unless you are an experienced aquarist" and you are not. Experience means you are set up and ready. You choose to buy the fish rather than the required necessities. And you have spent a lot more on fish this past year than what that test kit would have cost. Twice you have indicated you had "birthday money" and possibly Christmas money also, so you did have some money.

This is like if I brought home a canary without a cage and owned a cat! You need a plan before any living thing is entered into your environment.

Have i spent more than 36 dollars at 1 time thyra? thats how much that testkit costs, anywhere you go.

Oc- you ask anyone on this forum if they dont consider you the expert on Oto's on this forum, i just did that signature as a fun little thing and to try to be funny and friendly. I've been on this forum more than any of the others, and i feel your all kinda like my family, and if i had 36 dollars in my wallet at one time, id buy the testkit, but once i get money, mama finds something it could better be spent on or if its during the school year, i have to use it on my lunch. I wont buy a single other fish until i buy that testkit thou, and my other loach died today btw, i think it MAY be a possibility that they didnt just die, and perhaps Ferdnan killed them.
