Yes, Fishman, unfortunately having fish tanks is a TON of work. I came home on Thursday night to my 55gal with 6" of water in it and the rest of the water soaked into my living room carpet (problem with either the hoses or spray bar on the canister filter, so it was a slow "leak"). I had to move all the fish into different tanks, remove all the rocks, driftwood and plants, drain the tank as far as I could and clean up the carpet. All in all, it meant for 3+ hours of work and I still haven't gotten around to checking the canister yet (made sure the tank wasn't the problem first). But as soon as I get the problem fixed, I will be setting the 55gal back up, even though it means even more work.

As for the ram and African butterfly fish combination. It would work because rams are bottom-dwellers and African butterfly fish rarely, if ever, leave the surface. The biggest problem I see is that neither of those fish are very beginner-friendly, which means you'll have to keep on top of your water parameters (could mean bi-weekly water changes depending on your filter) and you may have to find special food for the African butterfly fish if it doesn't want to eat just plain old flakes...which equates to more work.

I've used old books to level my tank, but I'd definitely suggest wood. As long as you're emptying the tank it should be easy.

*sigh* -.- after many hours of work i finally leveled the tank and safely added all the same tank water back in and put the Danio's back in (thank god thats over) now i can get back to stocking. This is the plan so far....In 6 weeks, when i go to test my water (assuming she says its ok, if she doesnt it'l be 2 more weeks of waiting and by she i mean the LFS employee) Il add in my cleaning crew (either 4 cory's or 3 zipper loach's all depends on what they have, and a snail of some sorts, i noticed they had Tiger snails when i picked up my Danio's, are those good cleaners?) Then, After i add my cleaning crew, 2 more weeks later il add in 3 More Danio's. Im going to stop there because we all know how me and "Future Plans" go :D Let me know what you guys think

I don't know about those snails. I have Trumpet Snails in my tank to help aerate my sand, but it looks like you have gravel so you won't have to worry about that. Another good think about MTS is that they won't eat your plants, which is something a lot of other snails will do. It looked like you only had plastic plants, but if you ever wanted to get live ones in the future getting snails that won't destroy them might be something you want to look into.

I wish I could keep a few nerites. I fear their shells will dissolve in my tanks though, as they are all softwater right now.

Maybe I need another tank just for them! And then I could put harder-water fish in them, so I'd need more fish...and more plants....

Mwhahahahahaha!! MTS strikes again!

It is worthwhile to invest in liquid test kits. Pet store employees will lie so that you will buy fish, so unless you are willing to visit the store once a week to have your water tested, and you KNOW that the employee will write down the exact values for you, I wouldn't risk it.

Actually, for once, I don't see where this person is trying to sell him more fish - 3 danios in 6 weeks and then only 3 more - considering he did use TSS - supposedly he could stock faster than that if it was used correctly. That stuff costs over $20 here at Petsmart.

Well i just stumbled across a fish that i didnt know was a possibility until i seen it on Aqadvisor once i clicked "show only suitable species" and i checked every website i could and all said that a breeding pair of these should be kept in a 29 gal and just one can be kept in a 20 gal. I have a feeling that yaw might advise me against this but id rather have my hopes shot down than get a fish and it not work out AT ALL. *drum roll*

The fish i discovered was....The Convict Cichlid :D

Is this fish suitable for my tank (Id get a female if i got one) SO my stocking would be 3 Pearl Danio's. 1 Female Convict, 3 zipper loach's and 6 Tiger barbs (if needed i can take out the Danio's and add in more Barbs)

they will devour the shrimp so forget shrimp if you add them. once they start breeding, your other fish aside from tiger barbs will likely be chased, but i doubt any harm will be done.
idk they can work in your tank, but they tend to breed a lot so i hope you can accomodate that :p

I went back and looked at all your ideas since June 25th. You never did say what happened to the danios you had, but you obviously never included any more of them in you lists and so I can't imagine that they are really a fish you would pick. You don't say what happened to the Jack Dempsey or Tex, but the majority of the fish you pick are cichlids and get at least 6 inches. I suggest you go back and read your threads and then see if you can put something together from them that you really want.

I dont understand Thyra, Ive not had any danio's since my 10 gallon was setup and they all disapeared mysteryisly. The Jack Dempsey and Texas cichlid's i mentioned did exist but i didnt put them in the appropriate tank size, so i returned them. There is alot of things i really want but its hard to choose until i get to the fish store and see what they have in stock that day, which is what il most likely do. Il just make a list of the fish that will work, and go see what my fish store has in about 5 weeks which is when im going to test my water to make sure its safe. The bacteria colony stuff must have work cause its been up and running for over a week i belive and it hasnt went threw the cloudy phase yet where the tank is covered in a white cloud. Thats what normally happens with my tanks. I originally did consider doing a small African cichlid tank, but then aqadvisor had no African cichlid's on the "suitable species list" so i dropped that idea. Then i decided to do a female betta sorority, but thats to dangerous because my tank isnt setup for that. Now im sorta considering a Semi- Agressive community. I have a question thou that i was advised against a lil while ago in this thread. Cant i keep an Angelfish in my tank. Aqadvisor said it was ok with only the warning of "Angelfish prefer a tank built for height." Also lots of websites i checked said one would be ok in a 20 gallon long tank. The tank is 30 inchs long, 1 foot high, and 1 foot from the front to the back. A foot is 12 inch's and most angelfish top out at 6 inchs giving them 6 inchs of play room.

I don't mean this like it probably sounds, but does your LFS store not get annoyed at the number of fish you've bought and then returned?

be sure to do your research BEFORE buying a fish. Sure, that cichlid is only 2" in the store, but how big WILL it get? I generally recognize any fish in the lfs, and I know if it's suitable for my tank. But, I still research anything I'm even considering. If the lfs dosen't have it, I either try a different store or wait. It's not healthy to be bringing fish in and out, and I can't believe that your lfs likes it either.
A convict might be okay; but there are certainly better fish for a 20g community.

Good luck stocking!! I'll try come up with ideas for you :)
