So much for that idea, seeing as how I need a group of 6-7.

That would look really cool though.... A single species 29gal with rocks and driftwood with 6-7 zebras.

:)

that would be cool- I have always wondered why some of the flashier species don't command as much cash as the zebras- like false zebras and queen arabesques. You see them about as often and they are just as attractive (I think). I wonder if it's that sort of holy grail/ brand name mentality.

Hmmmm 6 or 7 at $85 -$100 a pop? I don't think Lotus will go for that!

I could do the "I have a surprise for you" bit, and instead of the new wood floor, we'll have a tank of 7 zebra plecos?

I could get away with 1, maybe even 2, but I think I'd be sleeping outside if I blew $700+ on some fish without her approval.

Well you should be able to get a deal on discus.

'That would look really cool though.... A single species 29gal with rocks and driftwood with 6-7 zebras'. Yes that's how breeding tanks look, and how my Lnumber tank looked.

Ashleigh hits the nail on the head. If you're waiting to get zebras for 30 bucks a pop, wait on. This years catch will likely be even more expensive. The cheapest I've seen this year was 50 dollars approx, at auction.
Cichlad man - are there no other L numbers you like? Queen arabesques, 6 for 120 dollars in Houston?

Oh those are cool. But i'm still facinated with L046. Looks like i better get into other L numbers though. :p Still you can't find any odd plecos around Columbia and if you do they run a minimum of $50. Like for a Lemon Spotted Green (L200), Mango (L047), and Gold Nugget (L081, L018, L177)........all cost $50 here for a 2"fish. I do look and if i ever find some other fancy plecos i'd love to have them. But my serch for zebras will not end until i have 6. :)

I believe the internet is quite useful for buying exotic plecs.... most lfs's are NOT.

2 inch gold nuggets that spend a long time bouncing round to a small lfs and then sit in the tanks for a while are not very hardy at all as they likely haven't eaten for some weeks. Get the mas soon as they come from the wholesaler.
Try Googling L 316 catfish..... or Hypancistrus

Or for german speakers www.l-welse-com

OK, lets finish this off. Zebra plecs are not CITES listed, though constant rumours on the inteernet abound that they are. But they're not, CITES say so. However IBAMA, who control fish exports from Brazil have now banned exports of Zebras till stocks have recovered substantially. They have released a press release to that affect, you can find it on the internet if you speak Portugese
If you're a dealer, there are fish available. A contact I have said list price has jumped 250% (!) for these fish. A total of 7 have come into the UK.
There are however a number of breeders worldwide selling these fish as small F1 and F2 for 80 dollars and up. Bear in mind you will still have to grow them out for a couple years.
SO don't expect bargains

I did find a guy that sells zebras 1 hr away. I asked for his stocklist of other fancy plecs and am awaiting that now. Hopefully i'll get that in the next few days. He gets his fish directlly from a wholesaler/importer, and i would have to pickup the day they are delivered to him.

You'll be lucky. Unless they have some sitting in a wholesaler vat, there won't be any, and then they'll be a hell of a price.. He'll order, they won't arrive. No longer exported.
I'd be curious what they're listed at now...

I guess cheap plecos are the prize for having to live in Texas? :p

Those prices aren't far off what everyone else pays with the exception of the zebra, online they are going for about $100 a piece and that's not including shipping.

Of course texas would be the first place for imports from brazil, so maybe that's why you are getting them so cheap. Petsmarts around here would never have a gold nugget in stock, not even sure if you can special order them.

I doubt that it is a wild caught.Like a typical plec,I tossed it in the tank and haven't seen it since or I would jump right on that pic.I tell ya what. You can have my plecs if you can move the San Bernardino National Forest out to Texas! Minus the movie stars!

Yea,I got an ID in over there now.I can't remember if it said Tiger or Zebra on the tank now.Sorry Folks!
Zebra's are pure black and white even when young.I'll get back to you and let you know what I find out.And I thought ID'ing cichlids was tough! Buyer beware on these catfish !
