:D So it seems you may have your way with my tank Orion. The Amanos and the betta have uprooted a lot of my microsword... so I'm going to pull it all back out, and rehome the Amanos in the 20 with the rest of the shrimp so they won't keep uprooting. While I have the microsword out of there, I'm going to try to flipping the driftwood over and give it that look you talked about. I think more light would penetrate the bottom that way too... and I won't have to keep separating all the microsword and bits of duckweed that are getting tangled in the moss.

It'll be a while before that happens though...

......
All the neons are dead...
i think the DG is dead (I can't find her)
I don't see the amano's anymore either......

Only thing alive is the betta, and she's barely hanging on.
If she dies too.............. I may just make this a shrimp only tank... seeing as to how my shrimp are doing quite well (well, they have a very low bioload in their tank, so it's easier to keep the ammonia and stuff down).

Yeah, Hurricane Ike left me without power since last Thursday night... and we're not scheduled to have power back until tomorrow, hopefully. I wish I had a geny so I could've at least keep the filters running. I wouldn't be surprised if my water bill is so high with as many water changes as I had to make. I got bacterial blooms in this tank and the 20...

I found my DG, she was hiding... the only survivors are my laberynths - The betta, and DG... I found some dead amanos in between the microsword, I also found some that jumped ship.... and dried up on the floor. :(

about 95% of my microsword is melted. I'm pulling all of it out and putting anything that's still alive in the 10 gallon to grow out another carpet. (I'm very surprised that the microsword is mostly melted... while the HC in my 10 gallon is doing well....)

I think I'm going to take Orion's idea about flipping over the driftwood... I'll just keep the driftwood with java moss and let it grow out for a long while, until I can get another carpet of microsword.

Since my shrimp in the 10 gallon seem to be doing well, I may just stick to shrimp-only tanks for now... I'll be moving all the surviving fish into the 15 gallon until I'm confident enough to move back into fish.

After spending so much time and money in this hobby, I don't think I can let one little (ok, kinda big) storm make me quit! :D

Power finally got restored yesterday afternoon. I got to clean the 20 gallon, now it's time to clean this one.

The only surviving thing in here is the java moss... This tank will look kinda different too... photo will come toward the end of next month.

I moved my cherries to this tank... and their population seems to have exploded even more. I was at a LFS this weekend, and overheard one of the attendants telling another customer who was overrun with cherries that they give store credit for them between $.75-$1 per shrimp. And they typically run out of shrimp quickly, so I may be taking some cherries there soon.

I'm going to let this grow out some more before a picture update. :)

Yay, but boo!!
I'm glad to know that my 15 gallon has awesome water quality, as I saw that the front glass has (had, scraped them off, although I'm sure they'll be back up there in the AM) a ton of hydra on it.

However, question - will they eat my shrimplets? I remember reading that they'll eat fry, but I can't recall if they're a danger to my shrimplets.

Yes, the hydra might eat your shrimplets (and probably will). They can be a problem in a shrimp-only tank, as most things that kill them also kill the shrimp.

What I did was use a syringe (no needle) and hyrogen peroxide. Just squirt it on the hydras you see, then suck them up when they curl up. If you leave them in there, they recover, but the H2O2 seems to harm them enough for removal. It's a pain to do, but it seems to be the safest way in a shrimp tank.

I thought I had won the battle against the hydras, since they haven't made an appearance on the front or side glass anymore.... I learned that they have a nice little nest in the back glass though, behind the heater... so this weekend, after my series of exams this week (boo!) I will get them all with what you just described. :)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *BOUNCINGS

OK, so I went to an LFS to go look at the prices on their tanks... $350 for a brand new 100 gallon tank with stand and lights! I was trying to decide whether to go with the 55 gallon for $250 or the 100. I know I can lift the 55 and it'll fit in my car.

In the end, I decided I'm going with the 100 gallon. When I got home, I measured the inside of my car, and it'll fit - I think I'll have to make two trips to get both the stand and tank home though. If anything, I may borrow my dad's truck.

Woo! :)

AWESOME! I have a 55G that houses Fancy Goldfish and a few other kinds of goldfish and can't see how I could plant it up...it's just too big in my opinion. I think it looks better with fake plants and marbles as does my 10G. I love my 29G being planted though.
