must be some other variety of mithrax...he has those nice algae claws so you should be ok there...upon further review it does appear to be gonipora, wish i could help you with some advice, but i killed one myself in the early days...asked the LFS if it was photosynthetic like zoanthids, guy said "yes" so i took it home...6 months later = sad times, but after that i researched everything lol

im starting to get curious about your "new friend"

I caught a few pics of him as he went on his nightly hunt for the crabs we buy for him. Well, here he is:

Its a Pygmy Octopus...yeh, i know; you're all probably slapping your foreheads saying "what the crap is this kid doing!?" Hes awesome though, and we figure if he gets too large then we can drop him off in our friends 30gal (he only has a perc in there). We made a custom fit wire mesh top, its the craziest thing in the world; id be air-tight if it wasnt for the wire mesh. The wire mesh is cut to allow the filter intake to go through and to allow the wire from the heater to come through, other than that its octopus proof (as of yet). He seems to be doing fine, he is eating a lot and is rather active at night (very skittish though). If you spook him (i.e walking by the tank) he'll flash random colors (black to white to brown) and suck back into the liverock. Ill post more pics later

Awsome, we can keep him then!

Im always in need of information, so im gonna ask you guys a few questions:

How hard is it to set up a MH light system (i saw the bulbs for sale at Home Depot and was wondering)?

Do Goniopora need to be target fed?

ill try to get some more pics of the Pygmy when hes out and about

Metal Halide bulbs sold at home depot will not be suitable for the aquarium. For such a small tank i would be worried that they will fry it.

I wouldnt even bother with feeding the Gonipora because its probably going to die anyways.

Flower pot corals are fairly inexpensive...so it will be nice while it lasts. Its like the rock beauty angelfish. 85-90percent die after a few months in captivity...with the few exceptions that you hear about.

I have some new pics:

This is one of him eating a crab (you can see the top of the shell), i took it today

This is one of him hunting a ghost shrimp last night, it was sweet.

I had to do a major water change (like more than 75%), twice, becuase he got spooked when he was hunting (i guess he saw me) and he inked. The filter took up most of it, but i heard it can be harmful, so i just went ahead with the water change.

If anyone knows of a place to host movies, or if anyone can host a movie for me; im getting one of the octopus hunting a crab.
