update

Ok, so i got a email from the dude with the mantis. From the pics it looks like a spearer, possibly a Lysiosquillid, might be a gono. though. I guess ill ask on reef central. Looks really nice though, its about 3inches long:

Yeah..it looks like a spearer...no fish with him. I would just get a bucket for the move and dump water and inverts in that. That way its a lot easier. And 20ppm of nitrates isnt that bad for a mantis tank.

Ok, so i asked the folks at reefcentral and its a N. Wennerae; a small brightly colored smasher that doesnt get bigger than 4" or so. Im really excited, asked the kid to email me back with some specifics and said id be happy to take it off his hands. Things are looking good

No reply as of yet from the dude with the mantis.

I transported all my tanks yesterday (thursday), im writing now from my home in CT. Transportation was a bitch, one of the filters broke on the way so my room mate had to go pick up a new one this morning. We bought 10gals of R/O SW from my lfs and used it for the tank. Everything seems ok in the nano. pH is at about 8.2, higher than it used to be, the calcium levels are ok after i added a few drops, the nitrates and nitrites are low (about 5ppm and 0ppm, respectively), ammonia is 0. Hopefully everything will be ok.

during the move i found a few new hitchhikers on my lr that got disturbed during the move and started to move around the tank. I found a few wormy-things, one of which i accidentally touched with painful results. Im presuming that was a fireworm or whatever. I also noticed one of my pieces of rock is completely covered in little barnicles. I also notices a bunch of pods floating around before i moved the tanks. I happened to turn on the lights at around 6am that morning; a good 3-4 hours before i normally do, and a bunch of little crab thingies ran into all the holes of the acropora, it was cool.

its rough to be home, a lot of memories, but its a relief as well.

Update

Ive been talking on and off with the dude who has the mantis and it looks good. He knows how to ship it and well figure out shipping once he gets a quote from the post office. He asked what a good price would be, i was unsure of what to tell him. My lfs would sell me one for like $35, presumably the same type of mantis, but they have a tendency to really overprice. I said $20, depending on shipping, is that a decent price, or should i offer more/less?

The feather duster fell out of its tube after the transportation to my friends house. She called my LFS and tey said to just stick it back in the sand and all should go well. Any advice?

Brissel worms are good in small amounts. They sift the sand. They will prey on fish when they get big and over populated. Since you dont have any fish it shouldnt be a problem.

i personally would say less for the shrimp. They are a pest people want to get rid of. If you feel hes asking to much tell him...im sure hed work it out.

christmas break

Hey all, back from break and a kick-*** cross country trip. The radar detector saved me who knows how many times. The nano looks good, the sand is well established and i have some stuff growing on the side of the tank (barnicles?). The polyps i had have grown and have some really kicking colors. Ill take some pics soon and post some new stuff.

Well, im back, and a bunch of stuff has happened, and ive lost even more money into this darn hobby. I got some new corals; some mushrooms and whatnot and ill post some pics as well. I also got something called "flower pot" coral, which is doing quite well. The tank looks good, we have yet to run into any real problem. Its a real ecosystem, some crazy stuff in the tank now. Ill be posting pics and descriptions on and off as the time passes. The stomatopod deal fell through, but i dont really mind that much, we found something far cooler ;) (pics of it soon)

anyhoo, here are some pics of the polyps and mushroom rocks, more to come soon

Im gonna be a bit of a tease, so thats all the pics for now (gotta keep the suspense up!)

invested, not lost! ;)

flower pot eh? the dreaded gonipora...tough to keep alive for any extended period of time, but I wish you luck with it. the others look like good choices, and i await new pictures

looks like it could be alveopora to me possibly, have you got a nice shot of the polyps?...alveopora is a little easier than gonipora, but still difficult to keep alive. as S Reef mentioned, they tend to not get the proper nutrients and nobody really knows what those nutrients are...they seem to do better in nutrient rich systems because they occur naturally in reef flats near areas of sedimentation, but as you know high nutrient load can cause problems for other reason

I recently went out and bought some kent "coral-accel" and "coral-vite", although i doubt its that easy, hopefully it will help a bit (considering the amount of algae in my tank it seems that there is a high level of nutrients already). Here are some more pics:

Some more of the mushrooms:

The not-so-emerald green crab hiding in the polyps:

some more later on tonight if i get the time
