That's a little heartless. Why not suggest that she take the goldfish back and get something more suitable for her tank?

Because she won't. If I were to suggest it she'd get defensive and shut me off. She almost did it when I was talking about other things tank related. I may not be able to save this fish, but I may be able to save the next one.
Once this one starts outgrowing the tank (lol, too late!) she'll give it to someone with a pond. There's a couple people in the office who have those.

Some newts, especially in the Pacific Northwest, produce toxins that can kill humans if they get on mucous membranes, open wounds or are ingested. One of the local TV stations has carried a story about this. I didn't know this when my kids were growing up and in spite of this lack of knowledge, they lived! We had one in our aquarium who escaped when Grandma was visiting. It was heading for her bedroom when she discovered it. Having grown up with her, I was surprised she didn't stomp it! As it was she yelled, didn't have a clue what it was, and grandson rescued it, but it eventually met its demise by escaping and probably drying up someplace.
no no no no no MK you didnt read what i said, i said 3 SMALL feedings a day, thats like 1 or 2 tiny flakes per feeding. I do 2 feedings a day for the flake eaters and 1 for my catfish. I dont have Planaria in my 5.5 gallon but i do in my 20 gallon becuase when i first get fish i get scared they wont eat so i feed them ALOT. Im sure my MTS will clean up that issue thou
What's planaria? This is the first I've heard of this. Google doesn't make them seem that bad... but still. They seem weird.
Also, while on fish disease:
I posted about this a while back, but one of my platies and one of my cories have red gills. The consensus was that it was ammonia poisoning from my tank doing a mini cycle, but I'm pretty sure its not since none of the other fish have it, and I test for ammonia regularly. I thought maybe the platy just had red gils since he has red elsewhere on his body, but that doesn't make sense for a cory. What could be wrong?

I'm already down to 1 feeding a day in that tank and just about daily water changes. That problem in the tank will be fixed. I read up. Daily water changes, gravel vacs, skip-a-day feedings. Yeah, I understand how to get em out. They eat eggs, but not fry. They can irritate fish, but not kill them.
It's the little mite looking things I'm more worried about. If they're ich that haven't gotten to my fish yet, then I'll either need to crank it up to 85F or get more meds....I'll probably do the meds. I've got nearly the whole medicine chest now. Ich meds is the last major piece I don't have.

are they those bubbly looking water mites? if so temp raise wont do much. I had them in my betta breeding tank once cuz i overloaded with plants and they multiplied because of a brown diatom bloom. the breeding tank was kept at mid 80F degrees so i doubt youll get rid of them that way. They arent harmful, and they eat algae and detritis from what I've seen but they are extremely unsightly.
About the planarians, I sometimes see them at night in my tank. also detritivores, though a pop explosion of those should not be happening. they wont harm fish, and some fish will actively eat them. anabantoids do.
