Hmmm, I had been using the slow freezing method, but after reading the article and these posts, I think I will switch to the quick temp drop or the alcohol. I guess the selfish advantage to the slow freezer is that I don't see the fish dying. But if it is more humane and efficient to do the alcohol or quick temp change, that's what I'll do from now on. Sometimes you really have to do it. Once I had a fish whose stomach exploded out of its body (a greedy guppy), but it stayed alive. I figured there was no way it could be happy and and no way to fix the problem...

None of the above for me.I use Clove Oil dissolved in alcohol.Clove Oil is a power ful anaestetic/pain killer.Catch your fish,in some of the tank water in a bowl, add a little of the mixture and swirl it around ,fish goes to sleep and never wakes up.Leave 'em in for at least ten minutes. Then dispose of as you see fit.

I found this site http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/tom06.html that says not to use alcohol but water.I've never had a bad experience with the alcohol though.Works well if you use it like the water method described.

You're all probably going to hate me, but I actually voted for the sudden blunt trama. I toss 'em out my window! I live on the third floor, and the lawn doesn't have grass, its all rocks and gravel. So I figure the impact kills them pretty quick. Plus I'm contining the cycle of nature, something is sure to come by and have a tasty snack. I only feel bad when I have an epidemic and I'm throwing out fish everyday. My neighbors on the first floor probably really wonder whats going on sometimes...

That is hilarious, in a kinda' morbid way. I think the impact may not kill them though. Have you ever gone out to check, or had one thrown out the window while you are on the ground to see if it dies on impact? I think humans die in falls because our bones break since our limbs are so long, but fish are more compact in design, and may fair falls better.

How exactly is that 'hilarious'.. there's me thinking it's cruel.

Hilarious, in that he would just toss something out of the window. So carefree! How many times have I wanted to toss a computer or printer out of a window. Out of sight, out of mind I guess was my motivation.

Anyway, it is good to see someone share their unique method, whether the consensus is for or against it.

KUDOS for creative thinking, although I'm not sure how humane it is...

I just found a new way yesterday.Just take your filter out to clean it and don't notice that a fish comes with it and falls off.
It was my Zebra Loach and by the time I found it it was on it's last few gasps. :( It was a bit dried out aswell.Sad I am.
