What the vet said

Hi all

I got hold of a vet yesterday (he'd been on Hols) and i asked him what is the best method to euthanise a fish. He said freezing is the most humane way (& he is a keen fish keeper himself) and that they wont feel ice crystals forming in thier tissue or anything. They'd just basically go to sleep. So i will continue to use this method in the future.

I still don't see how freezing them can be less painful then another method. Fish live in water, taking them out of water and throwing them in the freezer where there is no water...in water form....would that not be cruel? Thats like killing a human by drowning.

I still prefer knives. Its how you clean fish after you catch them. After that head comes off....thats all she wrote.

DUDE!, I think we're all talking about freezing them in a cup of water from the tank...

Yeah, I can understand your confusion about using the word "humane" to refer to animals. We went through a rather lengthy debate about using the word humane when referring to animals about a year ago. I think the conclusion is that it is appropriate, both linguistically, grammatically, and contextually to use "humane" when referring to the treatment of animals.

I could search for that thread and post it here for you if you like.
Humane doesn't refer to the 'victim' of the act. It refers to our attitudes towards it.

On a side note...for years I grew up watching TV shows, having fish, friends having fish...all were dealt with the same way. Flushing. Call it what you will, but it was driven into people's heads until they 'knew better'. Myself, I had no idea it wasn't an 'accepted practice' until I read this thread...though so far I've always brought mine back to the LFS so that I could maybe identify what was wrong, and they took care of it.

My Betta that I had when I was 11 years old, however, was flushed...cuz that's what I thought you were supposed to do.

Don't trample on people for not knowing...many of us had no idea. Why would I EVER think to put a fish in a blender?

Simply put the fish in a small cup or bowl and then fire this at it.

But seriously though folks, THIS would not be a very humane
way to dispose of ones' beloved fish, now would it?

On the contrary, for as Cichlid-Man put it, it wouldn't be
any more humane to freeze a fish out of water than it
would to euthanize a human by drowning.

NO!

So, I suggest that if any of you tin-pot dictators out there
decide to use one of those nukes you've got lying around
to dispose of your fish, then My God, at least have the
common courtesy to put the fish in the water before you NUKE IT!!!!

Thank you delta i do put my fish in water first lol. I put them in water from their own tank and then put them in the freezer. I trust that the vet would have told me the truth as its in the best interest for the fish. *celebrate

OK.So which one of you lot can lend me his rocket launcher?

I don't think I have room for the nuke.

Seriously though I still vote Clove Oil every time.I've tried several ways and this is the best so far.

Honestly, don't take what a vet tells you to heart. Where is dogdoc when you need him. Ichthyology is a very specialized field, wile a general puppy/kitty vet may have a good idea they by no means are an expert on the subject. Only 2 things make you an expert. School and experience. So if a vet has never taken any Ichthyology classes and never owned as much as a betta, would you really trust him/her to know what is best just because that person is a vet?

Well, I’ve experimented with a few different methods and I can say that killing an animal I have no intention on eating is not a very pleasant experience.

I’m not sure how this is rated but I’ve actually tried the alcohol method and it is nowhere humane. When I was about 17 I had a beta that was clearly diseased beyond repair so I decided to give him the “gas chamber”. What a stupid idea. At first it seemed to work like a dream, he swam furiously around the glass of rubbing alcohol for a few seconds and stopped. He started to turn kinda whiteish so I decided with a job well done to flush him and eat some Oreos. When I went to dump him he started at it again so I left him for a bit longer but after about a minute I decided that this wasn’t the best way to go so I cut his head off.

I had to euthanize a blue ram with a big tumor on his head. I cut his head off as well but I should have smashed him with a brick or something because I’m not sure how long brain activity continues after the head is removed.
