i think removing the eggcrate once the tank cycles would be fine. the only time i have ever heard of people putting eggcrate under the LR was in barebotton tanks. it was a good idea for circulation though.

Thanks for the reply. I had one more question though. My ammonia is at 0.0 ppm. The only thing which is high is the nitrite level they are very high. Is this normal in saltwater. How much time do you think I have before the nitrite levels go down now that there is now ammonia.

first the ammonia spikes....then drops as the nitrite levels spike.......as they drop everything should start to come out zeros when it does, then you are cycled......add livestock gradually so you don't create new spikes......and your tank has time to adjust to the additional bioload gradually......

Yes do take that eggcrate out now......people have put it down on the glass then added a dsb on top....a good 4 - 5 inches of sand....that way it keeps the dead zone undisturbed and it works better, though I don't know about it......just what they say.... Personally I added my rock directly to the glass then the sand around the rock......for stability. (then again my rocks are 30lbs each)

Thanks Lorna! Very informative post. Everything seems to going fine. Today I finally got my lighting. It has 2 compact bulbs both rated 65 watts. But one is Actinic Blue and one is 10000 K. Both have a different switch. My question is should i keep both of them on everyday for 8-10 hours. I only have live rock in the tank and it has not cycled yet. The LR seems to be doing good with the old lighting. Getting alot of red on the rocks. It wont be that long before the tank cycles. Maybe 3 to 4 days max.

UPDATE

This is a little update. I am updating the lighting which I got yesterday. I am very happy with the lights. Well worth the price. The tank has not yet cycled. Just had to post some pics with the lights on. I think the tank is coming out well. Let me know what you guys think about the progress.

Water parameters

Ammonia - 0.0 ppm
Nitrite - 5.0 ppm or more.
Nitrates - 0.5.
PH - 7.8 (will change after cycle)
Temp - 79 F "constant" (Thanks to the fan)
Salinity - 1.024

Cant wait to get the cleaning crew. Will ask about that at a later date.

The lighting in the box.

Lighting on its thrown.

Closer View

Finally the Moon lights (LED).

Tell me what you guys think.

I have a few questions. I should have started a new thread but here goes. As most off you know I got new lights and they are nice BUT since I added them most of the colors on the rocks are turning white. When I had the old lights on, all green was turning to purple or red but since I added the new lights all the green red and pruple is turning white. I did some research and found out that its just caroling algae is dying! Which I think is not good. Is this normal. What should I do? The parameters are:-

Ammonia - 0.0 ppm
Nitrite - 5.0 ppm
PH - 7.8
nitrate - 5.0 ppm
Temp - 79 F

What should I do to help. If I can help that is? Should I just leave it? Anybody!!

HELP!

Mushroomman said:
Coraline might just be adjusting to the higher lighting, certain kinds will grow under it, others wont, to be expected. Tank is cycling right?, with good water expect it to rebound.

Well it looks like it is dying to me and I mean on all the rocks. Yes the tank is cycling. The water quality is ok I guess, I had posted the parameters before. The only thing that is high is the Nitrite which is at 5.0ppm. It has been at 5.0 ppm for the past 3 days. Should I do a 25% water change? I would like to know what to do with the lighting. Since I got it I was swiching it on for 9-10 hours. How long should i keep the lights on for? Is 9-10 hours pushing it?

switching to a lot higher lights might have shocked it, try going about 6 hours for a couple days, then 7 then 8 and you get the picture.

Yeah I had read that somewhere too. I had an idea on what happened but did not know what kind of an action could I take to help. I will start with 5 hours a day hope this helps. Any idea's on the nitrite level? Shouldn't it go down slowly? Mine has been at 5.0 ppm for a while now.

what are your nitrates? how high does the scale for nitrites go? maybe you were off the charts.

My nitrates are 5.0ppm and so are my nitrites. Well on the nitrite chart 5.0ppm is the last. It could be possible. What should I do? Just wait?
