Hey Sean, When these guys breed, you going to ship? :D
As a matter of fact, breeding them is the primary reason I'm parting with my smaller tanks---the plan being to replace them with a 20 gallon long (to be used as a growout tank for the salvini).

And yes, once the pair spawns and I've raised the offspring to a suitable shipping size, I will definitely send some to whoever's brave enough to try em' out! ;)

Nope---the crays stay!
I'll be putting Jericho & Jerrica in the 20 gal. long. :D

And thanks for the feedback, everyone.
It's nice to see a lot of differing opinions on the aquascaping I've done in this tank!

It's definitely growing on me, so I'm leaning toward your advice to keep it as is, lordroad. ;)
The pieces of driftwood I've got positioned vertically are in fact separate pieces (there are 11 in this tank altogether). I've got them partly buried under the gravel, but for the most part I've managed to keep them upright by wedging them against one another, rocks, and the sides of the tank.

Everything is fairly sturdy.
Once the salvini get bigger, I'll likely pull apart the rock cave on the left side of the tank to open things up a bit more for them.

Thanks!

Good question, Fuzz.
I'm envisioning removing the fry (from the parents in the 55 gal.) once they hit about the 0.5 inch mark, which is about the same size of the platy fry I've had cohabitating with Jerrica (with none getting eaten) for the last little while.

The salvini fry will be much faster than the platies, so I'm willing to bet that losses due to the crayfish, if any, would be quite minimal.

Guess we'll find out one way or another...

Yup, thanks Matt...it's the female.
As you may have guessed or already know, the females of this species are more colorful than the males. Once they start spawning the male should color-up a bit more too though.

Virgo...you got me curious, so I'm gonna go check out your thread.

Spawning!

-major excavation project under some driftwood
-female has taken on more of a yellow coloration
-female making passes (i.e. egg-laying) over inner wall of driftwood 'cave'
-male following, and making passes (i.e. fertilizing) over same area
-male defending more of the tank

Short of actually seeing the eggs, I'm about 99.9% sure that fry are on the way! *SUNSMILE*

What are ya putting in that water? ;)
Hehe...TLC, Matt.
It's odd...cichlids seem to really enjoy spawning in my tanks. Granted, I've never attempted breeding any particularly fussy species---just your run of the mill cons and kribs---which breed like rabbits anyway, it seems.

Still, I think that breeding the salvini will be much more of an accomplishment.

I'm already thinking ahead to what I wanna do with the fry.
I know I'll be raising them with the parents for several weeks, and then they'll be removed to my 20 gal. long.

I'll start a thread on that tank once I'm able to get pics up and things progress with the spawn. Should I post it in a separate thread here in the cichlid section, or should I get one going in the breeding section instead? Probably doesn't matter either way, but I figured I'd ask all the same. lol
