Thanks, Helena. :)
And yes, Jeff, I shall comply and make a thread on my growout tank here in the cichlid section of the forum. If those 'non-cichlid' folks don't take the time to venture over here and see all our superb cichlid threads, then that's their loss! :p

On another note...dang it I wish I had my digital camera!
The female's coloration is stunning. Basically just look at my avatar and use your imagination to convert the greenish coloration you see on most of her body to a vibrant yellow. The 4 black horizontal stripes on her forehead are a lot more pronounced too! *SUNSMILE*

Wigglers!

Thanks, Cindy.

Got home today to find that the salvini have made quite a little trench system for themselves and their brood. I'm expecting free-swimming fry within the next few days.

Pics later tonight! :D

Female...such a vibrant yellow now.
I'm sure I'll get better shots of her once the fry are free-swimming.

Not much changed from the last full-tank shot...
Just added a couple more rocks toward the right side of the tank.

Sorry the pic turned out a little dark...tank is really a bit brighter in person.

HUGE debacle!

I'm totally bummed, and I could sure use some help from folks who have bred cichlids...preferrably CA's...heck, preferrably salvini...but I'll 'settle' for any help I can get.

Problem:
-male ousted female completely
-male ate all the fry

Now I've got one dominant male who rules the bottom of the tank and 3 subordinates (one being the ousted female; the other 2 being what I think are both males) who are basically trying to stay out of each other's way---especially out of the dominant male's way.

Possible Solutions:
-go to Petland (who happened to have salvini the size of my 'runt' for the first time in years) and start fresh with 4 comparably-sized runts...which would put them on a more equal footing (2 males; 2 females)

-get rid of 3 of my current salvini, keep one, and get 'suitable' CA cichlid tankmates for him to create a CA community of sorts
(if so, which types and how many of each?)

Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm about to bang my head against the wall.

10 ft. pole

Hehe...I'm betting no one wants to touch this one with a 10 ft. pole, eh?!
I can't say I blame you.

Here's what I'm looking at doing based on recommendations over at cichlid-forum:
-get rid of 2 non-paired salvini
-let previous pair sort out their issues and condition them to spawn again

The extra room should give the 'former' pair enough space...I hope...to sort out their issues.

Guess I'll be headed out to get rid of 2 of my sals this afternoon.
I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that I'm making the right decision.
