julis are pretty cool fish! i just got one for my african tank! imo i wouldnt do a juli only tank because they just dont swim around as much... but if you do end up doing it make sure you have good rock work in the tank cuz they love chillen in and on the rocks...thats what they do in the wild they kinda blend in with the rock.. im not sure how many you can do in a 55g but im sure quite a few.. good luck!! hope i helped a bit.

J. dickfeldi is a dwarf julie, so they don't get as big as say the regani or marlieri. With no other bottom dwellers in the tank I would say you could easily get away with 3 maybe 4 adult pairs with proper rock work, though if they all breed at the same time you'll have some problems on your hands. A 55 can make a decent mini Tanganyikan community. So with the end result in mind, 2 pair of julies would be plenty with another type of rock dweller or some of the larger shellies. A nice school of non-jumbo cyps would be very nice for filling out the upper tank giving you a 100% cichlid tank that you don't see every day.

And not tring to come down on you cause your young, this is just fair warning. Some Tanganyikan's can be pricey, so that can easily adjust your stock for you. :) But the julies are fairly common, so you shouldn't have much trouble with them. The 'midnight' strain of the dickfeldi are beutiful if you can find them.

If that's the case fuzz, then I'll let you buy me a breeding colony of feather fins, and I will swap out my 75 to put them in till I get a 180. If I bought the 180 with all equipment I might even come out cheaper ;)

I love tangs. But the $$ is why I'm taking an extended break. Plants are cheaper.

Sorry for the hijack, I'll shut up now :D

Lol, its ok Orion thanks for the heads-up! I made some other suggestions incase im not able to get the Julies or if i just decide to go with something else.

Blue Acaras
Tropheus sp.
Oscar
Mbuna(adults that i can breed)
Angels(try to pair 6 up)
Angels and Keyholes(raise some young together until they pair)
Frontosa(if it can fit)
Archocentrus Cryptoheros Sajica(if i find it, ill probably get it)
Rainbow cichlids
Apisto sp.
Rams
Green Terrors
Sevvies

Are any of those good suggestions for the tank, or if you have your own, please share.

Heros efacisatus (sp?) if you can get ahold of some. As Pure explained it to me, think of them like dwarf severums. The large male I had was maybe 6" TL. A very nice looking fish with a seemingly great personality in a semi-community setting. Most of the fish with them in my 75 are larger except for some L. dorsigera and they don't bother any of those. I've only ever seen them scuffle among themselves, and even when my former pair were protecting eggs they wern't overly aggressive to the other tankmates. (I know, I've preached this sermon before ;) but they are really a great fish!)
