I did a w/c today because I didn't want to risk algae, since I've been using ferts. There were a lot of decaying leaves on both the filter intakes, so I removed all of that, and anything else I found. Prior to my w/c, the ammonia was 2ppm (although it could've very well still been 4ppm, those colors are so close together). Immediately after my w/c, I did a full set of tests, to see how it would affect my water parameters after water changes (did about a 50% w/c). Ammonia was at 1ppm (I kinda figured it would be), Nitrite was .5ppm, Nitrates were 10ppm, pH rose up to 6.8 (as opposed to 6ppm due to the amazonia and co2).

Anywho, I decided to test the ammonia levels again to see if they went back up again b/c of the aquasoil, and they were still 1ppm. I'm guessing all that decaying matter I pulled out is the reason my cycle appeared to be taking so long. I'm going to wait till tomorrow morning to test again, just to verify my results.

My cycle is moving!!!

Ammonia finally down to .5ppm, while Nitrite is up to 1ppm.

Plant growth is still phenomenal! :D
I'm going to have to do a trim on the hygro polysperma green to try to get it to become bushy.

I noticed hydras in my tank :(; i't's going to be a major pain trying to get rid of them...

I thought Hydras had 9 heads... I guess I'll find out as I continue in my Mythology class this semester... which I'm already behind on : \

I'm not sure if they do. I've only had them in my shrimp-only tank (the 15 gallon). They sting, so I can't imagine a fish trying to eat one.

I wish I still had the option of boredom :(
School is kicking my butt, and it's only the 2nd week of classes... at least I'm keeping up with the homework, rather than doing my usual, not going to class and ignoring the homework.

I think Hurricane Ike solved that problem for me in that tank.

I wanted to use that approach on this tank, but it's hard to see them unless my face is almost up against the glass. It seems that some of them have disappeared on their own. There's other micro-organisms in the tank (can't remember what they're called), which are supplying some food for them, so it can't be that they're starving... could it?

Hmm... checked my parameters today.

.25(?) ppm Ammonia - I'm going to retest, it looks almost yellow, but I think I still see some green tint; I think I may have put in less than the amount of drops needed...
0 ppm Nitrites
? ppm Nitrates - haven't really checked them... they're usually 10ppm or less, and I'm doing a w/c before putting fish in anyway.

So I may be able to switch the fish over in the next couple of days.
