helena. helena. helena..... wow wow wow. that tank and those fish are just absolutely gorgeous. the shots are awesome. the rocks look great and the new background looks great now. the old one was just like my 10g background. its got me thinking a lot. so now i have to ask questions... lol.

would those saulosi do well with plants and corydoras and kribs. i know that they go well with bn plecs but what about a clown plec. im just thinking of black substrate and black background with green plants and slate. would it all work with saulosi and kribs with the plecs and corys. possibly even a female fighter?

p.ps great tank again and beautifull fish. also the sub-dom male did change colour a little throughout the thread. i noticed the lines were more visible.

Dan.

lol thanks dan :p saulosi like other mbuna are VERY agressive, they do not go well with other fish apart from other mbuna and possibly a few plecos. If you put saulosi in with kribs and corys, they will no doubt kill them, so a definate no-no.
Also was you thinking about saulosi in a 10gal?! wayyyyyyyyyy too small, as they are a dwarf mbuna species they need a tank about 30+ gals, most other mbuna need much bigger tanks say 55-75+gals.
Not too sure on the clown plecs, they need driftwood right? and i doubt saulosi would like driftwood in their tank because they like hard water with a high pH (7.5 to about 8.5), and drifwood lowers the pH. Plants are also a no-no because they will just rip them alllllll up, you might get away with anbuaias (sp?) but thats about it i would say.

so 10gals- nooooo
plants- noooooo
clown plec- not sure but i would say no
kribs -no
cories- no
female fighter- definate NO-NO

hope i helped :p

UPDATE!! i now have fry :D

well, i know it was abit early for me to strip the female but i knew the fry had hatched because i could see them in her mouth, and i really didnt wanna risk losing any, so i stripped her.
At first it was very difficult to hold her without hurting her, but in the end i got the hang of it and opened her mouth and out came swimming lil fry! i managed to get 6, although i have a feeling that there may be a few more in her mouth because i couldnt see inside. But i thought id give her a break so i put her back into the main tank, and shes doing just fine.

The fry do still have their egg sacks but they are doing just fine. They are in a net breeder atm and once they get abit bigger they will be going in a 12gal grow out. Depending on the sex ratio i will most probably keep 1 or 2 females and give the rest away.

ON ANOTHER NOTE....
i think 2 or 3 of the 'females' are males :(. They circle eachother and when that happens they get dark stripes through their bodies, just like a male :(

Wow, so that means you only have 1 or 2 females?
Congrats on the fry though---at least you'll (hopefully) get some females out of the batch so that you can add them to balance things out once they growout and get to a decent size. Good plan! *thumbsups

Thanks! well im not positive there males, they just act like them and sometimes get the stripes :p oh wellllll...
the female that stripped is in the same place as she was when she had a mouth full, her mouth also looks still a little swollen, and she wont eat.

i wont be trying to strip the rest of the fry from her this time, i had to delmolish the whole tank to catch her and i've just finished putting it back together ;)

Alright!
They should be obsorbed in a few days at least. Oh and anyother thing, dont keep them confined together for too long, I did that with my yellow labs in a little breeder box for a few days, then they started getting agressive towards eachother as soon as their egg sacks got obsorbed. They managed to kill off a few of the smaller ones!

well thanks to me for me a complete IDIOT, they all got eaten.
when i went to bed they were fine in the net breeder, when i got up they was only 1 dead one left. As i was looking inside to see where they all where, an adult saulosi came to the bottom of the net and SUCKED him through :(:(:(

i was trying to find my plastic breeder but i couldnt find it so i resorted to use the net one. I knew it wasnt the best idea because the saulosi would see their bright orange blobs of eggs sacks and they would be gone in no time. But in the day the saulosi wasnt paying any attention to them whatsoever, so i thought they'd be more than safe at night because the saulosi wouldnt be able to see them.....i was wrong :(

well im gonna have o wait till next time.....if there is one.

How big are the wholes in these nets? A fish sucking fry through a breeding net is news to me, never ever heard of that happening. All the breeder nets i've seen make that impossible.

My money would be they died for some reason and since they have like nothing to their bodies yet, rapidly decomposed into the water.
