All right, well Im facing a new problem. That brown algea junk that was on the one rock has now gone to the other rocks, and even in my sand. Its on the top of the sand and is now starting to form on the other rocks. Could this be from too much light, I turn my light on around 7am and turn it off at about 8pm, could this cause the algea. I am going to test my params right now, and hopefully can get my clean up crew tommorow. I need my cleaners to start dealing with this brown algea crap. Ill post my params and see what you guys think

Alright heres the test results:

Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 1-2ppm
pH: 7.8 (Very low but Im getting ph like 8.2 stuff tommorow that Ill mix in before I add the inverts)

When I go to my lfs tommorow I plan on getting my cleanup crew as well as the pH stuff. Does this sound like a problem. What I plan on doing is getting them then when I get home take some water out of my tank and then add the pH raiser and after sometime readd it to the tank, then add my cleaners and see if they can help me with this algea and get me ready for fish. Does this sound like a good plan?

Well I made the trip and got my cleaners.

Heres the List:
6 Astrea Snails
1 Camelback Snail (I am not to sure about this guy, have you guys ever had any or heard about them, I cant find them on the internet)
I bought 8 scarlet reef hermits, but one was eaten on the way home so i have 7 and a empty shell.
3 Bumblebee snails

Does this sound adequite? Is the camleback a problem? I plan on adding one skunk shrimp too then 3 fish.

Well now that I have my cleaners, and their doing pretty good **knocks on wood** I will test the params on friday and if there in line I may go get a fish and the skunk shrimp. Would it be smarter to get one clownfish and make sure he does ok in my tank, or should the two clowns be added at the same time to prevent angression. Also what would be the advantages of adding one fish before others. Should I add the Royal Gramma and the skunk then the two clowns?

i would add the two clowns at the same time...but before i do any of that i would give the tank a couple more weeks just to settle down and whatnot. i would add the clowns first, let them establish a territory, and then add the gramma. as far as when to add the shrimp it doesn't really matter

well my tanks comming along nicely. My crabs and snails seem to be doing good. The brown algea is all taken care of thanks to my crabs, but today I came home to something new. I was looking at my tank and noticed green grassy type algea beggingin to form in spots all of the glass. Im pretty sure this is normal, but would it be ok to just use my algea scrubber to remove it?

yes its normal and yes you can use the scrubber to get rid of it. i have found margaritas to be useful with that sort of algae but you may be fully clean up crewed already and it may well go away on its own

a note on your cleanup crew:
1-2 astrea snails (any more and they might starve when they eat all the algae)
1-2 scarlet hermits (these guys are a bit larger than needed for a smaller tank and very active/rambunctious)
don't count on the bumblebee snails to do much--they look cool (until coralline grows over their shells), but they are whelks and are not physically capable of eating algae...they'll just stir the substrate if you're lucky

other than that, everything looks good...as camaro said, wait a few weeks to make sure things stabilize, then you can add your clowns--good luck :)

thanks dback, Ill wait another week before I add anyfish.

The green fern algea on my glass is increasing, but my camleback snail seems to love to eat it, but he cant eat too much so Ill just take it out with a net and leave the stuff thats on my rock for him to graze on. Ill check my params tonight after I do a water change. I cant wait until i get my two clowns in their :)

Well its been about a week since I added the cleaners. I tested my params today and they were as followed

Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 0-.25ppm
pH: 8.2

The tanks seems to be pretty stable, and what I was wondering is what you guys think of purchasing fish tommorow? I know it was said to wait about 2 weeks for the tank to be sure to be stable. My sister is home from NYC and really wants to be with me when I get them. So do you guys htinks its a very bad move to purchase them tommorow because if it is, I will surley wait an extra week or so.

Also in general (even if I dont get them tommorow) what would be a good food to pick up for the clowns and Gramma. I can find proably marine pellets that will work, but do you suggest frozen foods? They have a wide variety of frozen foods, so would any of that be a good choice to have for either the clowns or gramma (is their like 2 or 3 frozen foods I can look for so I know theyll have atleast one) and Ill just go by judgement on the pellets or non frozen food.

mysis are a good frozen option. i would look for very small marine pellets as well as some flake.

as far as fish purchasing, i would wait but its obviously your tank/decision. if you get the clowns they are probably hardy enough to survive any fluctuations you might experience i am just paranoid...jersey and NYC aren't that far apart anyway, tell your sis she needs to come visit another time ;)

Im almost positive my LFS will have frozen mysis shrimp, would frozen brine shrimp work, or should I just stick to mysis?

I got a little anxiouse last night and was planning on buying my fish today, but after sleeping it off (and reading this post :)) I have decided to hold off on them because Ive waited and worked to make sure everything has been going smoothly, and to jump the gun now and put 60$ on the line just because I was impatient seems utterly stupid. So Ill keep watch over my params for swings and wait to get the 2 clowns until next weekend.

i think that will be for the best. just thought of this, but you could, of course, get them this week since they will be going into a QT tank right? ;)

as far as brine vs mysis: mysis has much more nutritional value than brine

I would suggest picking up both mysis and brine. My clown seem to prefer the brine but as 1979camaro said, its not as nutritional. I would also get a good quality flake or pellet as this contains all the other stuff like vitamins which your fish will need to stay healthy.
